Special Nature Reserve "Kаrаđоrđеvо"
The area of SNR "Karađorđevo" includes two separate natural units, i.e. two economic units. By the specific forest basis these economic units are "Bukinski Rit" and "Mostonga."
The first natural unit is located along the left bank of the
The other natural unit of SNR "Karađorđevo" is Guvnište and Vranjak which are separated by the small and waterlogged river Mostonga. This area is located northwest from the first natural unit and is located on a higher morphological entity. Possible access to Guvnište and Vranjak is from Mladenovo, about 2 kilometers away from second natural unit, and also from the main road Bačka Palanka – Sombor.
SNR "Karađorđevo" is a preserved marsh complex mainly located in the flooded part of the Danube in its middle course through
The basic characteristics of the SNR "Karađorđevo" are:
• Preservation and diversity of native forms of orographic and hydrographic wetlands such as old water effluents, so called Dunavci, meanders, shallower and deeper depressions and ponds - the most important are Grčka Bara and Široka Bara, as well as coastal beams created by coastal erosive and accumulative processes;
• Preservation of ecosystem diversity characteristic for the floodplains of large lowland rivers: swamp forests of oak, ash, black and white poplar, white willow forests, wet meadows, a community of white and yellow water lilies, water chestnut, etc.;
• Preservation and representation of native plant communities of wetlands: old forest of oak and ash, elm trees, black poplar and white poplar.
Ecosystem diversity consists from 40 plant communities and 2 sub-communities, within 5 sub alliances and 24 alliances, 18 orders and 14 vegetation classes. In total, there are 103 different syntaxonomic units recorded - 8 forest and 32 aquatic types, wetland and herbaceous communities. Here are also the remains of relict polydominant
• In the diversity and richness of vascular flora, highly protected and protected rare and endangered species indicate the authenticity, such as: yellow water lily, white water lily, water earthnut; while in forest habitats: black hawthorn, oak, white poplar, white poplar and others. Many of these species grow on the narrow and confined spaces and are present in small numbers.
• The fauna of the Reserve is very rich - water and wetland habitats are suitable sites for the development and survival of the representatives of order Odonata (dragonflies). It also represents the excellent torus and fish habitat. The diversity of fish fauna is reflected in the 16 species. From the aspect of the fish fauna protection, among the most important species are: pike - Esox lucius, bream - Abramis brama, blue bream - Abramis ballerus, bleaek - Alburnus alburnus, asp - Aspius aspius, silver carp - Cyprinus carpio, ide - Leuciscus idus, stone moroko - Pseudorasbora parva, European bitterling - Rhodeus sericeus amarus. At this site 12 species of amphibians class (Amphibia) are recorded and 8 species of reptiles class (Reptilia) as well. All of them are protected species. A general abundance is made up of 190 species of birds.
The baseline of ornithofauna of this area is given by vital local populations of nesting birds of the preserved floodplain forests and swamp complex, such as: the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), black stork (Ciconia nigra) and black kite (Milvus migrans). Because of its importance, Karađorđevo was declared in 2009 to be an area of international importance for birds (IBA), entitled "Bukinski Rit Rit" (area of 4851 ha). Mammal fauna is due to the diversity of habitats, and despite the increasing anthropogenic pressure, still rich and diverse. Its abundance and value is reflected in the large number of rare and endangered species, such as water shrew (Neomys fodiens), otter (Lutra lutra), wild cat (Felis silvestris), stone marten (Martes foina) and ermine (Mustela erminea).
SNR "Karađorđevo" covers 4184,24 ha. The first degree protection regime is established for 130,48ha or 3,12% of the total area, the second degree protection regime is established for 1649,52ha (39,42 %), while under the third degree of protection regime is 2404,24 ha (57,46 %) of the area.
